3112 Generalpractitioners and family physicians

Generalpractitioners and family physicians diagnose and treat the diseases,physiological disorders and injuries of patients. They provide primary contactand continuous care toward the management of patients' health. They usuallywork in private practice, including group or team practices, hospitals andclinics. Residents in training to be general practitioners and familyphysicians are included in this unit group.

Generalpractitioners and family physicians perform some or all of the followingduties:
Examinepatients and take their histories, order laboratory tests, X-rays and otherdiagnostic procedures and consult with other medical practitioners to evaluatepatients' physical and mental health
Prescribeand administer medications and treatments
Performand assist in routine surgery
Provideemergency care
Provideacute care management
Vaccinatepatients to prevent and treat diseases
Deliverbabies and provide pre-natal and post-natal care
Advisepatients and their families on health care including health promotion, disease,illness and accident prevention
Providecounselling and support to patients and their families on a wide range ofhealth and lifestyle issues
Performpatient advocacy role
Co-ordinateor manage primary patient care
Providecontinuous care to patients
Supervisehome care services
Reportbirths, deaths, and contagious and other diseases to governmental authorities.
