Thisunit group includes those who survey and assess landscapes; draw sketches andbuild models of landscape designs; construct and maintain gardens, parks, golfcourses and other landscaped environments; advise clients on issues related tohorticulture such as irrigation; breed, cultivate and study plants; and treatinjured and diseased trees and plants. They are employed by landscape designersand contractors, lawn service and tree care establishments, golf courses,nurseries and greenhouses, and municipal, provincial and national parks, orthey may be self-employed.

Mainduties

The following is a summary of the main duties for some occupations in this unitgroup:

Arboristsand tree service technicians examine trees and shrubs to diagnose problems anddisease, and apply various treatments such as pruning, spraying, repairingdamaged areas and injecting with treatment solutions.

Golfcourse superintendents direct crews who maintain the health and appearance ofgolf courses and their surrounding landscapes, plant and move trees, and applyfertilizers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides.

Horticulturistsplan and co-ordinate the growth and use of plants for landscaping, ornamentaluses and other purposes.

Landscapedesigners and landscape architectural technicians and technologists survey andassess sites, prepare drawings, sketches and reports and perform other dutiesto assist landscape architects in designing landscaped environments.

Landscapegardeners plant and maintain private and public lawns and gardens.

Landscapersplan and construct landscaped environments which may include trees,shrubberies, lawns, fences, decks, patios and other landscape structures.

Lawncare specialists visit clients, assess the health of lawns, and applyfertilizer, pesticides and other lawn care products.
