Employmentcounsellors provide assistance and information to job seeker clients on allaspects of employment search and career planning. They also provide advice andinformation to employer clients regarding employment issues and humanresources. Employment counsellors are employed by human resource departments ofestablishments, employment service organizations, consulting firms,correctional facilities and by federal and provincial governments. Supervisorsof employment counsellors are included in this unit group.

Mainduties

Employment counsellors perform some or all of the following duties:

Interviewclients to obtain employment history, educational background and career goals

Identifybarriers to employment and assist clients with such matters as job readinessskills, job search strategies, writing résumés and preparing for job interviews

Assessneed for assistance such as rehabilitation, financial aid or further trainingand refer clients to the appropriate services

Provideestablished workers with information and strategies for maintaining a job ormoving within an organization, dealing with job dissatisfaction, makingmid-career changes and adjusting to workplace transitions

Collectlabour market information for clients regarding job openings, entry and skillrequirements and other occupational information

Adviseemployers on human resource and other employment-related issues

Provideconsulting services to community groups and agencies, businesses, industry andother organizations involved in providing community-based career planningsupport or resources

Mayadminister and interpret tests designed to determine the interests, aptitudesand abilities of clients.
