Mainduties

Non-destructive testers and inspection technicians perform some or all of thefollowing duties:

Setup and calibrate non-destructive testing equipment

Conducttests to ensure quality or detect discontinuities (defects) using ultrasonic,radiographic, liquid penetrant, magnetic particle, eddy current and othernon-destructive testing methods

Establishtechniques for proper examination of objects under inspection, ensuring strictadherence to safety regulations

Interpretradiographs, cathode ray tube (CRT) or digital readouts, conductivity metersand visual indicators

Applytesting criteria in accordance with applicable specifications or standards andevaluate results

Organizeand report test results

Mayperform specialized inspections using acoustic emission, vibration analysis,infrared thermography and laser shearography testing methods

Mayinstruct and supervise trainees.

Industrialradiographers using a radioactive isotope must pass an examination to berecognized as a certified exposure device operator by the Canadian NuclearSafety Commission.

Weldinginspector certification by the Canadian Welding Bureau is available in threelevels and may be required by employers.

Boilerand pressure vessel, process pipeline and above-ground storage tank inspectorcertification is available from the American Petroleum Institute.
